My project.

I will be watching and reviewing every single English-language comic book film which meets my criteria. The restrictions are as follows:

No serials.
No pilots, failed backdoor pilots on a case-by-case basis. (IE, no Witchblade, but Generation X or Nick Fury will probably be fine.)
TV movies only if they are stand-alone. This means that unfortunately, I can't review the Hulk TV movies, because they are just part of the series.
No animated films.
The film must be based on a comic book, not a franchise which happened to become a comic book. (IE, no Timecop or Aliens vs. Predator)
I won't review anything I absolutely can't find, but I will call upon all of my resources to find things.

This will continue and be a feature on the blog for a long time, I suppose.

A couple of things-

You're missing out on a couple of really good animated movies. A couple of the Batman ones especially are probably as good if not better than most of the live action films. But I guess the line has to be drawn somewhere.

Also, are you going to be reading some of the comics to get context and do a comparison, or are you just going to judge the film on its merits?

I was originally going to put in the animated films. I still may if I somehow blow through this current list, seeing as how I'd love an excuse to watch Mask of the Phantasm or New Frontier again. The reason I cut them out is that there are so many, most of them fairly poor (I've seen a lot of them), that they just made the list bulky. I'd really like to complete this, but I'm pretty lazy. Streamlining the list will help me keep to the project. Things like When the Wind Blows and Fritz the Cat are likely going to be added to the list, provided I can get a hold of the source materials. Speaking of...

So far as the films based on graphic novels, I've read a good amount of the sources. I have pretty good background in Marvel/DC characters, and many of those comic book films are based on miniseries or famous storylines. For example, in preparation for The Dark Knight, I'll read The Long Halloween. For films not based on any particular novel, miniseries, or monthly storyline, I'll have to do research on the character. Either way, once I've compiled sources, I'll compare the printed material with the film in the course of the review. Those sections won't be so much critical analysis as brief objective comparison, however, because for the most part I don't believe that there is a correlation between source loyalty and quality.

Thank you for your input.
